When you have a tooth pulled or extracted, how you care for the wound will determine your comfort level during the healing process. By following our team’s aftercare tips, your healing journey will go much more smoothly. In Scottsdale, Arizona, Drs. Terry Peterson and Stephanie Troglin and our Brilliant Smiles Dentistry team ensure patients understand the importance of quality aftercare. With their help, patients will heal much faster with fewer complications.
It is crucial to refrain from using any sucking motions after a tooth extraction. This includes smoking cigarettes or using straws, as both can dislodge the blood clot that forms over the open wound. If this clot is dislodged before the tissues start to heal, it can cause a painful condition known as a dry socket, which is characterized by an open wound.
Once a tooth has been extracted, the wound may bleed for several hours. It is important to keep the initial gauze in place for 30 minutes and then replace it every 30 to 45 minutes until the bleeding significantly decreases. Biting down on the gauze applies pressure to the wound and helps maintain moisture, allowing the healing process to begin. Keeping the gauze in place also enables the formation of a thick, secure blood clot that will protect the wound as it heals.
Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water every few hours can help keep the area around an open wound clean. This practice reduces your risk of infection and prevents an unpleasant taste in your mouth. As long as you don’t swish the water too vigorously, rinsing will not disturb the clot that protects the wound. Additionally, the water helps keep the wound moist and promotes faster healing.
After tooth extraction, it is typically advised to avoid brushing near the extraction site for at least 72 hours. You can resume your regular brushing and flossing routine, but take extra care around the extraction area for a few days. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently to avoid causing irritation.
Just because you have a tooth pulled doesn’t mean you can’t eat a healthy meal. It is important, however, that you eat soft foods. Hard or chewy foods can irritate the wound as it is trying to heal. Eating soft foods will be less irritating and prevent bits of food from becoming lodged in or near the wound. Don’t forget to rinse your mouth after you finish eating.
