Dental crowns are very versatile and durable. With a dental crown, your dentist can protect a damaged tooth and beautify your smile. Different materials are used in certain situations, allowing your dentist to make procedures more affordable. Drs. Terry Peterson, Stephanie Troglin, & Elyce Cederholm of Brilliant Smiles Dentistry in Scottsdale, Arizona, use dental crowns in many ways to provide each patient with the personalized treatment they deserve.
There are two types of crowns. Temporary crowns are used for shorter periods, usually six months to a year. Their primary use is to protect a tooth while it is healing or replace it until a more permanent solution is agreed upon. Proper care and maintenance allow permanent crowns to last 10 to 15 years. They will replace temporary crowns once healing is complete.
Dental crowns are made from composite resin, dental-grade porcelain, or metal. Composite resin makes temporary crowns, while porcelain and metal are used for permanent crowns. Composite resin is inexpensive but will withstand the pressure and constant wear and tear associated with eating. Porcelain and metal (usually gold or silver) are more expensive but can last much longer than composite resin.
Dental crowns are used in several ways. They are a good choice for damaged or broken teeth. Once repairs have been made, a crown covers the entire tooth. This will prevent further damage and keep your teeth looking nice. Crowns can also be used on bridge appliances and retainers if a tooth has been lost. This fills in the gap and prevents shifting or moving.
Dental crowns are easy to care for. You simply care for them just as you would your other teeth. While retainers and dentures need to be brushed or soaked at least once daily, other crowns are cleaned when you brush or floss your teeth. Rinsing your mouth after a meal is sufficient if you don’t have your toothbrush handy.
Dental crowns are not always permanent. Temporary crowns may be used for several weeks or months until a more permanent solution can be found. Procedures like root canals may require longer healing times, so temporary crowns are used while healing occurs. Once everything looks good, your dentist will put in a permanent crown that will last many years.
