Having a tooth pulled or extracted is sometimes a necessity if you want to maintain good oral health. Your dentist may not consider a tooth extraction until all other treatment options have been exhausted. Dr. Terry Peterson and Dr. Stephanie Troglin at Brilliant Smiles Dentistry in Scottsdale, Arizona, utilize all available tools to maintain your smile. However, there are several reasons to consider a tooth extraction. If you are having problems with your teeth, schedule a visit with our team immediately.
A tooth that has extensive damage due to an accident may not be able to be repaired. Deep cracks or chips can compromise the tooth’s integrity to the point where it can’t be repaired. We will evaluate the severity of the damage and see if any treatment options will work to restore the tooth. If not, then an extraction will be recommended.
Overcrowding is common, especially when your wisdom teeth start to come in. Your wisdom teeth may come in crooked or at an angle, putting pressure on the teeth next to them. As the pressure intensifies, it can force the surrounding teeth to shift out of place or even cause them to crack or break apart. There may be instances where a child’s permanent teeth start to come in before their baby teeth fall out. This can also damage the surrounding teeth.
Patients with advanced gum disease may begin to lose their teeth as their gums deteriorate. Your gums may begin to recede, pulling away from the teeth, causing them to loosen and eventually fall out. Treating gum disease while it is still in its earliest stages may prevent the need for an extraction. Gum disease can lead to infections that spread throughout the body. Our dentists will continue to monitor your gum health to prevent further deterioration.
A failed dental procedure can sometimes result in the need for a tooth extraction. The dentist must go deep into the tooth to remove the pulp during a root canal. If any interior pulp is missed or an infection develops, the tooth may become unsalvageable. Although the dentist will attempt to save the tooth, excessive damage may necessitate removal.
Tooth extractions are needed if you are preparing for dentures. Your dentist may pull your teeth a few at a time or all at once. Several things must be done to prepare you for a set of dentures. The preparation process involves more than just pulling your teeth. Measurements must be taken, and molds need to be created to ensure your dentures appear as natural as possible.
Tooth extractions are typically considered a last resort. Our dentists at Brilliant Smiles Dentistry in Scottsdale, AZ—Drs. Peterson and Troglin will exhaust all options before removing one or more of your teeth. However, there may be situations where an extraction is necessary.
